Insulate Your Attic in Order to Increase the Energy Efficiency of Your Home

Insulation

It does not matter if the outdoor temperatures are considered to be cold or hot, the insulation levels in your attic will have a dramatic impact on the amount of energy consumption that affects your home, as well as its general level of comfort.

In this guide, we will help you determine how much insulation you should have in your attic. All you need is to be able to access your attic, a tape measure, and a little bit of time in order to figure out what your insulation depth is in your home.

The following outlines the various zones for the southern states that we service here at Southern Industries Home Improvements:

  • Tennessee is Zone 3 in some areas and Zone 4 in other areas.
  • North Carolina is both Zone 3 and 4
  • South Carolina is Zone 3
  • Georgia is a mix of Zones2, 3, and 4
  • Alabama is Zone 3

The following outlines the steps to adding insulation to the attic, based on the previously-mentioned zone. (The recommended insulation levels per zone)

  • Zone 1 with no insulation is R30 to R49 and if there is already 3-4 inches of insulation, R25 to R30. For Floor, R13
  • Zone 2 floor is R13 TO R19, with insulation is R25 TO R38 and an uninsulated attic is R30 to R60.
  • Zone 3 is R30 to R60 for an uninsulated attic, R25 TO R38 and an insulated and R19 TO R25 for floor.
  • Zone 4 is R25 TO R30 for floor, R38 for insulated, and R38 TO R60 for uninsulated.
  • Zone 5 and up is R25-R30 for floor, R49-R60 for uninsulated, and R38-R49 for insulated.

How to Check Attic Depth:

In order to successfully check the depth of your attic, complete the following steps:

  1. Locate the Access to the Attic
  2. Once you are able to locate the access to the attic, you should determine what type of insulation is in the area. In most instances, it is fiberglass, cellulose, or a spray foam type.
  3. Now, measure the depth of the insulation.
  4. Once you measure the depth, you need to figure out what your current R-value is right now. For example, it would be R26 AT 9 inches deep.
  5. If you want to reach a certain depth – such as 12.75 inches, you need to put 3.75 more inches of insulation if you have a current 9-inch depth.
  6. If you are having a difficult time with this project, we here at Southern Industries Home Improvements can assist you. It is important to figure out the exact amount that you need in order to ensure your home is energy efficient.
