Types of Gutter Systems Available to Homeowners

The gutter system of your home is one of the most critical of all components. This system is designed so that it directs water away from the structure and its foundation. The purpose and intent of the system is to protect your home from any and all types of water damage.

There are many varieties of gutter systems currently available to homeowners. The most common include k-style, box gutters, and half-round. These may be composed of vinyl, aluminum, and steel. The type of gutter system that you should select must be based on the specific needs of your home. Continue reading to learn more.

K-Style Gutters

K-style gutter systems resemble the letter “K” when viewed from the side. These systems are also referred to as “ogee gutters”. These are best suited for homes that have modern-based roof systems. Examples include those that are composed of metal and asphalt shingles.

These are exceptionally easy to install. The back end is flat and attaches right on to the fascia board. The front of the gutters includes curves that resemble that of the crown molding used on homes. Best of all, they do not have to be installed into your roof, which will avoid the issue of voiding out the warranty associated with your roof.

Box Gutters

A box gutter system is composed of a wood frame that is covered by a sheet of very thin metal. The metal composition may be copper, galvanized steel, or even stainless steel. These types of gutter systems are commonly seen on historic homes. Upon close inspection, you will find that these are typically built right into the roof or the roof overhang.

The benefit is that these systems blend right into the architectural style of the home. The main disadvantage is, because of the wood, a lot of maintenance is required to keep the systems running optimally.

Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters are designed in such a way that they look as if a tube has been taken and has been cut in half. They make a great addition to both historic and modern homes. The exceptionally large diameter of these units and their downspouts allow for a larger amount of water to be emitted from away from the home.

If you like in an area with a lot of snow and even torrential rains, the half-round gutter system would be perfect for your home! These are heavier than traditional systems and are typically a bit pricier due to the manufacturing process, but well worth the investment.
