Shower pans are designed in such a way that they prevent water from pooling around the area of the feet when the shower is in use. It is the part of the shower that you stand on and helps to appropriately drain the water.

Movement with the Shower Pan

It should never have any movement as this component is affixed directly to the floor with substances such as concrete, various types of sealants, and even bolts.
If you notice any type of movement, you could have a leak. If you do not have one at first, you are likely to develop a leak.
Cracks in or around the Shower Pan
If you see cracks in or around the shower pan, this is a sign that a leak may be occurring. If you have a plastic type of pan, the crack is likely to develop right inside of the pan itself. If you have a shower pan that is composed of more studier materials, look to the area in the shower pan and immediately around the shower pan.
If cracks are occurring, you should turn off the water supply to the shower and discontinue using until the shower pan has been replaced. Continued usage could result in more damage and the structural integrity of the home becoming compromised.
Deflection
Deflection with a shower pan includes sloping and instability. It is a movement that goes up and down. This means that the floor directly underneath the pan has incurred water damage. This should be checked immediately and the deflection issue should be completely resolved prior to using the unit again. Be certain to have the subfloor evaluated, too.
If this is allowed to continue, it could result in severe damage to your home and you may find that it becomes a danger to you, too. It is not at all uncommon for floors to give way when water damage is present.
