What Are the Signs That My Home’s Gutters Need Replaced?

clogged gutters

Your home’s eavestroughs – or gutters – are designed to direct the water that goes down on the roof away from the home. Now that the rains are starting to blow through every now and then, it is important that you pay attention to the overall performance of your home’s eavestroughs.

These components of the home age just like other components of the home. By staying diligent and replacing when necessary, you will be able to avoid costly damage and significant repairs.

In this brief guide, you will be introduced to the most common signs exhibited by eavestroughs that indicate replacement is necessary.

#1: Holes, Rust, and Cracks

If you have an older eavestrough system attached to your home, it is likely that the system is composed of metal. Systems composed of metal are capable of showing wear and tear a lot easier than systems composed of other materials.

If you notice holes, rust, and cracks, it could be a sign that it is time to replace the eavestroughs. Yes, there are repair kits available, but the severity of the issue will determine if the kit will be successful or not.

You do not want to wait for holes, rust, and/or cracks to get too large before addressing them. If you do, you may find yourself with a damaged roof, a flooded basement, or even a cracked foundation.

#2: Peeling Paint or Damage on Trim and Siding

If you have discovered that the trim or the siding of the home has peeling paint or other signs of damage, it could be a direct result of spillage over the eavestroughs. Not only does the moisture damage the exterior of the home it will – eventually – make its way to the interior components of your home.

When this happens, it will start wearing down on those areas. The result would be wood rot and the development of mold and mildew. All of these issues result in the structural integrity of your home becoming compromised. If you notice these issues, get an inspection immediately on the eavestrough system of your home.

#3: Flooding and Leaks in the Basement

If the eavestroughs on your home are poorly functioning or not functioning at all, it can result in your basement leaking and/or flooding. In most instances, you will likely notice the pooling of water around your home, but this does not always have to be the case.

If you find you are having moisture issues in your basement, you should have a gutter expert evaluate the eavestroughs on the home to see if it is in need of replacement.
